Staff Profile for Joyanne Bloom - ABE Instructor

Joyanne Bloom has a long and diverse history with SERRC. Currently, Joyanne works at The Learning Connection, SERRC’s adult education program, where she helps students attain their GEDs. She also trains school boards and community advisory councils to run effective, productive and fair meetings using parliamentary procedures. The latest project she’s excited about is evaluating Project Access, a Project GRAD component of the Kenai School District.

In the late seventies Joyanne worked with the Rural Student Vocational Program overseeing high school students’ two week Juneau home stays during their career internships. That led to her designing and facilitating the Alaska Close Up Program which has become part of SERRC’s All Alaska Academy. She has written other curriculum including a training manual for Village Police and Safety Officers and a fetal alcohol syndrome unit for high school students.

More recently, Joyanne has worked in adult education and started a SERRC Juneau Valley Adult Education Center at a family homeless shelter. She offered classes in ESL and Citizenship and has earned her TESOL certification. She has trained other ESL teachers at statewide and national conferences. Joyanne recently enjoyed travelling to China on two separate occasions to offer English speaking summer camps to middle school students.

In the summer months, Joyanne crews on her daughter’s Bristol Bay drift gill net boat. An avid traveler, she loves to visit new places in Alaska and to paddle, hike, cross country ski, or dangle a herring at the end of a line.
