2012 ALASKA CLOSE UP SESSIONS

February 6-10, 2012

February 20-24, 2012

Students will meet and network with other Alaskan students and teachers to learn about the three branches of state government and how they work together to govern the people of Alaska.  Work with Legislators and others in state government to solve a local problem.  Visit various government sites, hold standing committee simulations and a mock legislative session.  Your week-long session will be packed with exciting activities that are aligned with Alaska Content Standards.

Alaska Close Up has been creating Alaska’s future leaders for the past 30 years and has served over 3,000 students. To attend, students should have a basic understanding of state government and be able to work with other students and adults. Sessions may be composed of two to three student groups:

7 – 8th grade Junior Alaska Close Up students

9 – 12th grade Alaska Close Up students

11th – 12th grade Government Interns

Each group will have some activities in common, and other activities especially for their group.  Government Interns have previously attended Alaska Close Up, and at this year’s sessions will be job shadowing in an Alaska government position.
